Indications/Uses
Short-term symptomatic relief of acute sore throat.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult ≥18 yr 3 sprays to the back of the throat every 3-6 hr up to max: 5 doses in 24-hr period. Max duration: 3 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to flurbiprofen, ASA or other NSAIDs. Active or history of recurrent peptic ulcer/haemorrhage & intestinal ulceration. History of GI bleeding or perforation, severe colitis, haemorrhagic or haematopoietic disorders related to previous NSAID therapy. Severe heart, renal or hepatic failure. Last trimester of pregnancy. Childn & adolescents <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use at 1st appearance of skin rash, mucosal lesions or any other sign of hypersensitivity & if mouth irritation occurs. Not to be used perioperatively in patients who have recently undergone CABG surgery & revascularization procedures. Exacerbation of infective inflammations eg, development of necrotising fasciitis; purulent bacterial pharyngitis/tonsillitis. History of bronchial asthma or allergic disease; HTN &/or heart failure, fluid retention & oedema; GI disease eg, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, GI toxicity; serious GI events & other risk factors associated w/ PUD eg, alcoholism, smoking. Cardiac impairment; abnormal bleeding; SLE & mixed connective tissue disease; analgesic-induced headache. May cause allergic reactions due to methyl- & propyl parahydroxybenzoate. High-dose & long-term use. Avoid concomitant use w/ other NSAIDs including COX-2 selective inhibitors. Concomitant use w/ diuretics, oral corticosteroids, anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), SSRIs or antiplatelet drugs (eg, ASA). Mild to moderate hepatic dysfunction. Renal impairment. May impair female fertility. Not to be given during 1st & 2nd trimesters of pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation. Childn & adolescents <18 yr. Elderly or debilitated patients.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, headache, paresthesia; throat irritation; diarrhoea, mouth ulcers, nausea, oral & oropharyngeal pain, oral paraesthesia & discomfort (eg, warm or burning feeling or tingling of mouth). Hypersensitivity reactions, oedema, HTN, cardiac failure.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of adverse effects w/ other NSAIDs (eg, COX-2 selective inhibitors), low-dose ASA. Enhanced effects of anticoagulants eg, warfarin. Increased risk of GI ulceration or bleeding w/ antiplatelet agents, corticosteroids, SSRIs. Reduced effect of diuretics & other antihypertensives (eg, ACE inhibitors, AIIA). Increased risk of AR w/ alcohol. Exacerbated cardiac failure, reduced GFR & increased plasma glycoside levels w/ cardiac glycosides. Increased risk of nephrotoxicity w/ ciclosporin, tacrolimus. Increased serum levels of lithium, phenytoin. Elevated conc of MTX. Reduced mifepristone effect. Altered blood glucose levels w/ oral antidiabetics. Hyperkalaemia w/ K-sparing diuretics. Delayed excretion w/ probenecid- or sulfinpyrazone-containing medicinal products. Increased risk of convulsions w/ quinolones. Increased risk of haematological toxicity w/ zidovudine.
